AV Bros. Puzzle Pro 3.x Tutorial Image (Kinder-garten-puzze!) The Idea

We idea was to create the collage of a group of children, where each child was shown in a separate puzzle piece, plus the group-shot for the central piece.

The Plan

Based on the number of the children in the kindergarten's group, we had to prepare the appropriate layout and then, using the Image Overlay option of AV Bros. Puzzle Pro 3.x, complete the task. Here we must say that the Image Overlay option is the new option of the latest version of our plug-in, thanks to which the realization of such an idea has become prompt and simple.

The Process

For your convenience, we have prepared the ZIP file with the source images and the Puzzle Pro 3.x settings file. Click here to download it.

Preparing the layout:

There are 7 kids on the main image (the Group photo) that we've got. So, we are about to make 9 pieces layout (7 pieces for children, 1 for the group image and 1 more for the title). AV Bros. Puzzle Pro 3.x Tutorial Image (Kinder-garten-puzze! - Fig1)
  1. Create the new RGB document (1000x800 pixels). Set the foreground and background colors. (The colors are not critical, so let it be blue and white accordingly.) Add the new layer and fill it with, for example, white color. Make this layer active and start AV Bros. Puzzle Pro 3.x.
  2. To simplify things, we recommend that you use the settings from the downloaded ZIP file. Go under the Main menu of the plug-in and using the Load command, load the kindergarten_settings.avpd file. As far as you can see on Fig.1, initially it was the regular 7x7 layout with the classical shaped knives. But to obtain the desired look of the Splitter, we have added several extra knives (read the How to add an extra knife? topic of the User Guide, if necessary), properly manually adjusted the position of some knots (read the How to randomize knots' position? topic of the User Guide) and then, hid the unnecessary knives (see the pale grey knives on Fig.1).

  1. Click the Apply button to employ the Draw Splitter option of the plug-in. You will obtain the Splitter drawn with the foreground color inside the host (see Fig.2). This Splitter's shape will be a good helper for your accurate allocating the images with children for further employing the Image Overlay option.
  2. Open both Photo_1.jpg and Photo_2.jpg in Photoshop and copy the area with the child's face and put it into the separate layer of your working document (the document in which you have the drawn Splitter). Do this procedure 7 times for each child from the group. Open the Group photo.jpg and put it in the separate layer as well. Make sure that the layer with the Splitter is the topmost and then, make the draft distribution of these images, using the drawn Splitter as the guide while positioning the images (see Fig.3).
  3. Turn OFF all layers with children, but one and again, using the drawn Splitter as the guide, accurately position the image with the child. Make sure that the image fully covers* the particular piece (better to say the upcoming piece). Then, for the best appearance of the child's image, we've manually (using the Photoshop's tools) blurred/removed the unnecessary parts of the image (See Fig.4). Make this operation 8 times (for each child's image and for the group photo).

    * In some cases, when the picked image does not fully cover the particular piece, it is a good idea to add the deficient part to this image, using one of the plethora of methods that provides Photoshop, rather than find another image or change the layout. In our particular case, we've found out that the image with the girl is not as wide as we needed (a few pixels were missing...). So, we've enhanced the right side without any loss to the important content's quality.
  4. Add one more layer and make the rectangular selection that will cover the uppermost double piece and fill it with the desired color. This is the background for the title. Write the desired title and this will complete the layout preparation. Now, if you turn ON all layers, then you will see something similar to Fig.5 (The appearance depends on the order of the layers in your document.)

Completing the design:

  1. Turn OFF all the layers, except the very first (and lowest) layer that was filled with white color. Make it active and start AV Bros. Puzzle Pro 3.x. (Thanks to the fact that you've applied it before, for obtaining the Splitter, the plug-in remembers the layout, so you won't need to load the settings file.)
  2. Click the Cut button and once the plug-in completes cutting and switches into the Puzzle Mode, click the Bevel effect button, located in the Main window (see Fig.6). Use the controls located in the Bevel effect window to obtain the desired bevel and then, click the OK button.
  3. Click the Image Overlay effect button, located in the Main window. By default, the "From Document Layer (Auto)" option is used, so you just need to check the LCD-like display for the "From Auto-Selected layers" title. If you give a look at the Main window, then you'll see that our preparations very pretty successful and all images were places onto the appropriate pieces (see Fig.7).
  4. Click the OK button, located in the Image Overlay effect window. Since we don't need the outer white "piece", we select it and turn it OFF (hide), by clicking the Hide button located in the Main window of the plug-in.
  5. Click the Apply button. You've obtained the desired result inside the host. The only thing that would be good to add, is the underneath layer filled with some color and the drop shadow effect that complete the entire design (see Fig.8).
